I was blessed by attending a Christian Science Sunday School for several years; but when I left home after having graduated from high school, I strayed from Christian Science, forgetting it completely as a healing agent. Gradually even its letter began to recede from my thought.
Smoking became a tenacious habit, which, try as I would, I could not break, and I would spend evenings in succession drinking with those I then considered friends. Whenever I had a physical problem, I would unhesitatingly report to the medical department of my company for treatment under the medical insurance plan to which I contributed.
One winter an influenza epidemic spread through the city, and I landed in bed with a severe fever. I took medicines, but found no relief. By the fourth night I was pitifully weak, due to the intense fever, and having gone three days without food. I was afraid that I would not last through the night without some kind of relief.
