My basic maladjustment to the community of contemporary theology is due to the fact that I got my principal religious experience out of the Bible .

One day, when I was comfortably settled down in a career as an agnostic professor of philosophy, .... the small college where I was employed ..... asked me also to ... teach the Bible as literature. .... What I taught as literature began to infect me as religion .
