A period of unfoldment in my...

A period of unfoldment in my life came at a time when I was in college, attempting to be socially acceptable by drinking at parties and smoking excessively. I was awakened to the wisdom of the First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (Ex. 20:3).

My thought was uplifted while my roommate, who was not a Christian Scientist, was away for a week and I had the opportunity of being alone to meditate more earnestly on the truths I had learned some years previous to this time in a Christian Science Sunday School. My roommate, a precollege friend, and I had at times discussed my religious convictions. His questions were a challenge to my understanding of the good, immutable, God-given qualities which man reflects, and our discussions were often a source of irritation to both of us.

In his absence, I began to see man as truly a reflection of God, a spiritual idea, and my consequent efforts to work for the harmony needed in our relationship were diligent. At the end of a week devoted to study and the application of divine Love to the situation, I completely lost my taste for tobacco and alcoholic drinks. Shortly afterward, it was possible for me to become a member of The Mother Church and of the Christian Science organization on the campus.
