When our daughter was two...

When our daughter was two years old, she fell backward from a chair, striking her head with great force on the sharp edge of a concrete curb. We were attending a party at the time, and the other guests expressed much alarm. My first thought was that there are no accidents in divine Mind. Knowing that there is only the one Mind, God, who is lovingly caring for His children at all times, I denied vigorously the suggestion that there are many minds.

The bleeding was profuse, and I wrapped a towel around the child's head while I held her. I persistently refused to allow anyone to examine her, nor would I do so myself. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 261), "Look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality," and I knew that it was neither necessary nor wise to try to see the injury when in reality in God's perfect, spiritual creation none existed.

Our daughter continued to cry; and since there was much fear being expressed, I decided that we should leave. As soon as we were in the car driving home the child became quiet, and all the way I declared spiritual truths audibly to her and her brother, who helped in maintaining our trust in God's care. When we arrived home I called a practitioner, asking her to work to dispel the fear that was expressed.
