The first sentence in the Preface...

The first sentence in the Preface to the Christian Science textbook by Mrs. Eddy is, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings" (p vii). This is true, as was proved to me one day in particular.

Some time ago a member of the stall of the bank where my husband is employed called me to tell me that my husband had been taken suddenly very ill and that he had no speech and was paralyzed in the right arm and hand. I was told that they were planning to bring him home to me. As soon as I got the message I said to myself: "It's a lie. God never made illness, and this lie cannot touch us."

I called a practitioner right away, telling her of the message I had just received and asking for her help. She said she would do prayerful work for my husband immediately. I also told her that it would be necessary for me to call a medical doctor on account of the requirements of his employers. When I called the doctor, I thought of Jesus' healing of the ten lepers. He said to them, "Go shew yourselves unto the priests" (Luke 17:14), to show that they were healed. The practitioner's work was sustaining me too, because I had no fear of what the doctor would find on his arrival.
