A High School Student Writes

One With God Is a Majority

One aspect of our lives which is very important to us as teenagers is "the crowd"—the group of friends around whom most of our social activities revolve. The crowd is usually fun to be with and, perhaps even more important to us, provides security—the assurance of being included in plans for the kind of fun we want to have.

But what to do when our friends plan something which is not the kind of fun we want to have or display some attitude or characteristic which seems undesirable to us? The temptation to conform simply because we want to go on being included in the crowd is not easy to overcome.

At such times we must not allow a lack of Principle to govern our actions even though it seems to be governing those of our friends. Instead, we must remember the advice of Paul to Timothy (I Tim. 4:12), "Be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." These words are especially valuable when we consider that many of our friends may be of a different religion from our own. If we set a good example by following the ideals of the Christ, Truth, we shall win respect for ourselves and for Christian Science.
