The study of Christian Science...
The study of Christian Science has brought to me main blessings, and I wish to share with others my first healing. After surgery and many other forms of medical treatment had failed to help me and the physicians had given me no hope of recovery, I was healed through Science alone of cancer of the stomach and many complications.
My husband asked me to try this religion, which we had heard about from my sister and from his brother; both of them had received healings through its application. I asked my husband to buy me a copy of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and to call a Christian Science practitioner some miles away. In the little town where we lived then, there was neither a practitioner nor a Christian Science church.
The prayerful work which was done for me by the practitioner lessened my fear and that of the family; but because the physical evidence remained, I did not appreciate the good which was being achieved and asked the practitioner to discontinue the treatments. However, I continued to read, study, and ponder the textbook persistently, especially through the sleepless hours of the night.
I gained the courage to give up the liquid diet I had been following, and I tried to eat whatever was prepared for the family. I was greatly impressed by Mrs. Eddy's statements: "The Bible contains the recipe for all healing," and, "The Bible teaches transformation of the body by the renewal of Spirit" (Science and Health, pp. 406 and 241). Spiritual understanding was what I needed.
After I had been studying for about three months, I became depressed and discouraged as a result of the visit to my home one day of a relative who was opposed to Science. To my delight a letter arrived the next day from a relative, a Christian Scientist, who could not possibly have known of my discouragement. He sent me many helpful and comforting truths and also citations for me to study from the Bible and from Science and Health.
The letter lifted me above my discouragement. Although I did not grasp the full meaning of the truths contained in it, I realized the necessity of putting into practice the small degree of understanding I had.
My healing was slow, and the way sometimes very rugged; but I was never again tempted to doubt God's loving care for man. The periodicals were a priceless help to me; in a year and a half I had proof that the healing had taken place, because I passed a medical examination for an insurance policy. I am deeply appreciative of the lessons I learned in patience as the effort was made to overcome self-pity and other false dispositional traits.
I have had healings of many kinds since then, one of which was of a pronounced case of pyorrhea. I am grateful for the inspiration and spiritual unfoldment which resulted from class instruction, for membership in The Mother Church, and for the dedicated work of The Christian Science Board of Directors.—(Mrs.) Olive M. Gordon, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
My wife's testimony is accurate in every detail, and I wish to corroborate it. Through this healing I became interested in Christian Science, and I am grateful for the many proofs I have had of its healing power. Among them are the release from the tobacco habit, the healing of broken bones, and the overcoming of undesirable traits of character.
I am exceedingly grateful for protection over a period of years, and I know it has resulted from the study and application of the many truths found in Science and Health. I am grateful for Christ Jesus, for Mrs. Eddy, for membership not only in The Mother Church but in a branch church, for the privilege of serving in the latter, and for the joy of class instruction.—Forrest Erie Gordon.
