About three years ago, I awoke one morning with a severe pain in a finger of my right hand. Through the prayers of a practitioner, I was soon relieved. However, two weeks later the pain returned in a more severe form to my shoulder and arm. I could barely raise my hand, and I had to have assistance in order to get dressed. I had continued treatment in Christian Science, and gradually I was able to move my shoulder and arm. But one finger remained stiff, and I could not close my hand to grasp anything.

I worked with the Concordances to the writings of Mrs. Eddy, studying the references to action, movement, and perfection. I held constantly to her words in Science, and Health (p. 275), "To grasp the reality and order of being in its Science, you must begin by reckoning God as the divine Principle of all that really is." This guidance was very helpful.

It was necessary for me to realize and acknowledge that God is the only cause and creator; that man is flexible, and that Mind is the source of all movement, controlling every action. In the Bible the account of Jesus' healing of the man who had a withered hand was very helpful (see Luke 6:6-10).
