My mother became interested...

My mother became interested in Christian Science when I was a few months old, and I have relied solely on God for healing.

Christian Science was a sustaining influence to me while I was in college. One healing that stands out to me was that of what I believe was a dislocated intervertebral disk. I awoke one morning and could not lift myself out of bed. I was to take a final examination at college that afternoon and was very much concerned because I thought I might not be able to be there.

My mother called a practitioner, who began to pray for me immediately. That afternoon I had recovered sufficiently to be able to go to the examination, but I still could not move my head, or bend, or open doors. Through the continued work of the practitioner I was completely free in several days.

Much of my progress in Christian Science has come since I have married and had a family. The birth of each of our three daughters has been at home under natural conditions.

Each problem that I have faced and solved has left me much stronger spiritually, and this was particularly so as a result of the following experience when I learned the lesson of obedience and consistency. One of the children had an infection in a nostril. At this time I was laboring under the belief that I was busy and that it was normal to be studying the Bible Lesson, outlined in the Quarterly, under chaotic conditions each day. This resulted in little spiritual growth.

After some time, I called a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful treatment for the child. After one treatment the condition was almost gone. However, one week later it was obvious that the healing was not complete. It was pointed out to me by the practitioner that I should have an hour of quiet each day to myself, and I immediately started to get up an hour before the family in order to study and pray. The infection was completely gone in about three days' time.

One difficulty that presented itself to me for a period was that of colds. In a telephone conversation with my mother, we talked about the unreality of this condition in the light of Christian Science. When the conversation was started I had a sore throat, but after I had hung up the receiver I realized the soreness had completely disappeared. This was my first instantaneous healing.

While my husband and I were awaiting the arrival of our third child, it seemed right for us to have a house suitable for our needs. However, there were no finances to purchase such a house. But there were many Bible verses that were very comforting to me at this time, including these from Matthew (7:9, 11): "What man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?" "If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?"

The concept of God as man's Father-Mother and the truth that man lives as a spiritual idea in God's house, or consciousness, was in my thought constantly. In the next seven months my husband's salary supplied not only the house, but also enough money for some redecorating and much-needed furniture. This was another proof that our needs are met as we turn to God for our help.

I am grateful for all the avenues of good that Mrs. Eddy has provided for our growth in Christian Science. Class instruction has been a priceless gift. I am grateful for Jesus' mission, which has been made clear through Mrs. Eddy's unselfish unfoldment of Christian Science.—(Mrs.) Judith Gallup Quirk, Birmingham, Michigan.
