"Not as the world giveth"

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you," declared Christ Jesus at the close of his ministry (John 14:27). Such spiritual understanding as Jesus shared with those who followed him prepared them to think as he did in terms of peace and equally so in terms of provision and security.

To that little group, peace was more than a period of relative quiet. It was a settled conviction within them that come what may the law of God which they were fulfilling would provide whatever they needed in order to succeed in the work that God was giving them to do. It was in such conviction that Jesus was constantly at peace with God and, consequently, with himself.

The Master was not complaining when he said to his disciples (Luke 9:58), "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head." He was doubtless pointing to the protection and support that he was continually receiving of God, Spirit. Previously he had told them (John 4:32), "I have meat to eat that ye know not of."
