When I went to the United...
When I went to the United States in 1922, I knew nothing at all about Christian Science. A few days after my arrival I contracted a severe sore throat, and my sister, a Christian Scientist, with whom I was staying, said that with my permission she would like to call a practitioner. I wondered what she meant, but agreed, asking nothing. In a short time the practitioner arrived and spoke to me at some length about Christian Science. She did not mention my throat, but on leaving she recommended that I get dressed and go out for a walk.
While my sister saw her out, I got up and looked at my throat; not a vestige of the painful condition remained. I knew then that Science was the only religion for me, and from that time on it has meant a great deal to me.
When my son was quite young, he was in a cart with a rather excitable mare drawing it. My husband had loaded some milk churns on the cart, and the noise upset the mare and she ran off. My husband failed to catch her, and of course as the mare gathered speed the noise from the rattling churns was alarming. Hearing the noise I went out and saw the mare running down the road in my direction and heard the boy crying out.
