For years I accepted the teachings...

For years I accepted the teachings of an orthodox church, but the vague answers I received to vital questions about God and man failed to satisfy my conviction that one should rely on God for every need, including health, and prove his faith by his works.

On New Year's Day, 1957, I resolved to seek a clearer, higher understanding of God. Several days later a young woman who had learned of me through a mutual acquaintance telephoned to ask for advice about a book manuscript. When I visited her home a few nights afterward, I saw a copy of the Sentinel lying on a table. I could not recall having heard of this religion, yet, to my own surprise and hers, I exclaimed to my hostess, "Don't tell me you're a Christian Scientist!"

The brief explanation she then gave of Christian Science seemed wonderful and logical to me. I eagerly read the periodicals she lent me. At the end of that week she brought me a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Within twenty-four hours after I opened the textbook, my family experienced healings of a sprained knee, a severe nosebleed, a headache, and a burn, simply from my firm declarations of statements Mrs. Eddy makes concerning the allness of God.
