This testimony is written in true...

This testimony is written in true and humble homage to Christ Jesus and to Christian Science and its Discoverer and Founder, Mrs. Eddy. My introduction to Science by an officer of the British Navy took place in the Aegean Islands soon after the First World War when my family and I had left Russia. I shall never cease to be grateful for this introduction.

Then followed many years of studying Science on my own in Greece, Turkey, and Yugoslavia, where there were no Christian Science churches, societies, groups, neither practitioners nor visits from lecturers. The remoteness seemed hard at times; but in reality it was a blessing, because working alone I had to rely entirely and exclusively on my genuine understanding of God and man and of my relationship to God and to my neighbor.

However, in 1933, because of certain circumstances, I temporarily gave up my reliance on Science, and I was operated on for a rupture. A few days later the condition developed into a more alarming form. The doctor who had operated on me recommended another operation as soon as I felt strong enough, predicting that even after I had had it I should have to be very careful and not ride, dance, or undertake any strenuous exercise.
