When I was a new student of...
When I was a new student of Christian Science, I was visiting in my mother's home in an eastern state with our two daughters. One Friday the younger child, who was then one year old, manifested the symptoms of a cold. I declared the truth as I understood it, holding to certain spiritual facts given to us by our Leader in Science and Health.
There was little improvement by Saturday evening, and by Sunday evening the family was much concerned about the child's condition and were anxious for me to call a doctor. None of them knew anything about Science; but I assured them that the child was in God's care and that I was sure He would not fail His children.
The next morning, Monday, the symptoms were alarming. The baby was unconscious, and the older child was also manifesting inharmonious symptoms. I tried to get in touch with the one practitioner in the town, but she was away. A member of the family came up to the bedroom and in tears begged me to please let her call a doctor. She said that she believed the child had bronchial pneumonia. I gently explained to her that I could put no faith in materia medica and that I could only rely on God to free the child from what had never really been true because it was not created by Him. Then I asked her to leave us in God's care.
