Prior to 1958 I knew nothing of...
Prior to 1958 I knew nothing of Christian Science. Then, while visiting at the home of a friend, I picked up a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy more because of my fondness for books than because of the urge to read, since my eyes were very painful, and reading had become difficult as a result of glaucoma.
Upon opening the book, I was inspired by the wonderful message in the first few lines. I read a little each day as my eyes would permit. It took me ten days to read the first thirty-seven pages. On page 38 I read these words: "Jesus said: 'These signs shall follow them that believe;... they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.'"
I leaned back, closed my eyes, and repeated this message over and over. Opening my eyes again to continue reading, I found my sight blurred, and I could not see the print. I remember offering a prayer of gratitude to God that I had found so much comfort in the short time I had studied Science to prepare me for blindness.
