With a heart full of gratitude...

With a heart full of gratitude for Christian Science and what it has meant to me, I wish to lift my voice in praise of this wonderful religion. It meets all our human needs when we apply its teachings sincerely and with consecration. I can say with Mary Baker Eddy (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 177), "The evidence of divine Mind's healing power and absolute control is to me as certain as the evidence of my own existence."

For many years I had heard people speak of "the truth" and would wonder what they meant. Soon after I began studying Christian Science I learned what Truth is through its healing effect. In fact, I learned the synonyms of God, one of which is Truth. I was impressed with the need to learn more of God, Truth, right then.

The healing that awakened me took place several years ago. I had a severe attack of sciatica. I had not had a doctor for many years, but neither had I relied solely upon Christian Science although I had been reading the textbook, Science and Health. This particular day my husband was unable to reach the Christian Science practitioner I had sometimes called upon for help. No doctor was available to come to see me until very late in the day. When the doctor did come, he said he could do nothing for me. It became clear to me that this was an opportunity to make the decision to have Christian Science treatment and rely upon it alone until the healing came.

The following day a friend who was a member of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, telephoned to ask if she could do anything for me. I quickly accepted her offer and said I would appreciate her coming to see me. I asked her what she would do if she were struggling with my particular problem. She recommended I call a Christian Science practitioner and ask for treatment.

After she left I looked in The Christian Science Journal and called a practitioner whose name was listed there and whom I had seen at church. After we had talked on the telephone for a few minutes, she made an appointment for me for three days later. I expressed wonder about how I could get to her home, since I had not been able to walk. She told me that she would pray for me in the meantime and that I would be able to come.

On the day of the appointment I was able to dress and take a taxi to her home. After a very enlightening talk, during which she answered many of my questions, I was greatly helped and relieved of pain. I felt at last I had found what I had been seeking for many years. I asked how she could do for me what I did not seem able to do for myself. She said that as a result of her study and application of Christian Science over a period of years, she had a better understanding of God.

This made a great impression upon me. Right then and there I decided to strive for a better understanding of God. The following week I returned to the practitioner's home but was able to take public transportation. I am grateful to say that the third week I was able to walk to and from my appointment, which was a distance of about one and a half miles each way, and soon there was no trace left of the sciatica.

Since then I have had many healings of such conditions as burns, crushed fingers, grief, and lack of supply. I can never be grateful enough for the comfort and joy which Christian Science has brought into my life. It is truly the way of Life for me. I am also grateful for class instruction and the yearly association meeting, which always brings spiritual refreshment and inspiration.—(Mrs.) Thelma Poters, Chicago, Illinois.
