Understanding and Gratitude

Gratitude flows freely in the hearts of those who understand the vast significance of the discovery of Christian Science by Mary Baker Eddy. The deeper the understanding, the greater the gratitude, the more spontaneous the desire to spread abroad an appreciation of this great discovery, the truth of being. Mrs. Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings"(p. 1), "To kindle all minds with a gleam of gratitude, the new idea that comes welling up from infinite Truth needs to be understood."

One should always gauge his understanding by his ability to kindle in others gratitude for the scientific Christianity that has blessed and healed him. It is a privilege beyond reckoning to be the possessor of the knowledge of the divine idea that is Christian Science. And no one can possess this knowledge without a warm desire to share it. Mrs. Eddy describes her discovery in these words in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 205): "Christian Science is the full idea of its divine Principle, God; it is forever based on Love, and it is demonstrated by perfect rules; it is unerring. Hence health, holiness, immortality, are its natural effects."

Christian Science provides the healing truth needed under every human circumstance. People long for healing and wise direction but sometimes become so intent upon the personal benefits desired that they lose sight of the primary aim of every healing, which is the revelation of the spiritual idea. If purpose is tainted with materialism, gratitude decreases and spiritual inspiration to pursue Christian Science for its great spiritual value weakens.
