About seventeen years ago I suffered a great deal from a circulatory difficulty connected with a heart defect. I was confined to my bed for sixteen weeks, four of which were spent in a hospital. The numerous medicines and injections I was given did not bring the longed-for health. Up to this time in my life I had shown little receptivity to religious matters. However, in my great need I cried to God, "If You are real, God, then help me!" As short as this prayer was, it was a fervent cry for help.

Having thus prayed, I became calm. The next day I felt strong enough to go to the attic in our apartment building to get something. There on the floor I saw a paper-bound periodical, which I picked up. It was a copy of the German edition of The Herald of Christian Science. I took it down with me to my apartment. Feeling weak and cold, I went back to bed; but after a time I picked up the Herald and turned over the pages. The testimonies of healing related in it aroused my interest. When I had read them, I knew that God had answered my prayer and was now pointing out the way to me. I searched for the Bible. Upon opening it, I read the following words from Isaiah (41:13): "Fear not; I will help thee."

Then I turned over a lot of pages and came upon the following phrase: "The word of God is quick ..." (Hebr. 4:12). I read no further, for these words made a deep impression on me. If "the word of God is quick," or vital, I reasoned, then God will really help me as He has promised to do. I felt cheered. From that day on, I refused all medication and continued to study Christian Science. Within a week I had regained my health.
