Over thirty years ago I was suffering from what two physicians and a bone specialist diagnosed as tuberculosis of the spine. Their verdict was that an operation was necessary. I knew nothing of Christian Science at this time and consented to the operation.

A year later the same trouble returned lower down in the spine, and I had to wear a cast for some months. Several years later there was another return of the trouble; and soon the lower part of my body was paralyzed and I was unable to walk. I was taken to a hospital, where I lay on my back for over a year.

Before the trouble returned the last time, I had been reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and some of the authorized periodicals. I had been attending Christian Science church services and an occasional lecture on this religion. I had also been having treatment from a practitioner. She was able to continue helping me through prayer all the time I was in the hospital, because no medicine was being used. I was simply being cared for there.
