It was about 1896 that I first...
It was about 1896 that I first heard of Christian Science. Some time before, I had experienced an accident; as the result of it I was suffering from displaced organs. No medical treatment that I tried relieved me, and I found my work of teaching difficult and painful.
A dear friend then offered me Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, telling me that people had been healed by reading it. I took the book gladly, and as soon as I began to read it I knew that it contained the truth I had been seeking for a long time. I did not put it down until I had finished it. By that time I had forgotten the pain, and I found myself well.
I loved Mrs. Eddy from the first day of reading Science and Health and knew that my life must be a constant effort to live the truths I was learning so that I might heal others. I had many inspiring experiences during those early years, showing what Christian Science could do even in the face of bitter opposition. I met this opposition both at home and where I went to help others; but as a result I gained much wisdom and patience and understood better the way in which our Master did his healing work.
