"Brain is not mind"

In Christian Science a fundamental thesis is that there is actually only one Mind, or God, and that this Mind is the controlling, sustaining intelligence of all ideas. Basic to the teaching is the truth that Mind is incorporeal—that it is not material or confined within any bounds. Mind is infinite, and all who reflect this Mind have an incorporeal intelligence not in any way related to matter or mortal mind. James said (1:5), "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." Here is no corporeal mind.

To understand Mind, God, is essential if one is to demonstrate Mind's control in his affairs. He who believes that mind is in brain or matter is unnecessarily restricted by the limitations of this belief. He may believe that brain can tire or wear out by much use or that it can be damaged by some accident or disease and suffer from the consequence of that belief. But if man's wisdom and intelligence are the reflection of tireless, limitless Mind, then man's capacity cannot deteriorate or die. Man's capacities are as eternal as Mind, and this truth is demonstrable in our human experience. Sooner or later we must acknowledge that God, not brain, is the only Mind or intelligence.

Stressing the infinite source of man's intelligence, Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 372), "Remember, brain is not mind." It is of great importance that we awaken to the fact that Mind knows all and that matter has no thinking capacity at all—no inherent power to make any intelligent decisions.
