When I was eighteen years of...

When I was eighteen years of age, it was believed I would never see twenty-one because I was so thin and because two of my older brothers had passed on with tuberculosis. At that time I was living a busy social life and was drinking and smoking.

Although this went on for thirteen more years, I was then told I had a bad heart condition. When the First World War broke out, I wanted to join the Navy, but I was rejected. I was drafted into the Army and rejected again. This worried me and led to a nervous breakdown.

A friend with whom I worked heard of my condition and encouraged me to try Christian Science, lending me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. He assured me I could be healed if I would study the Lesson-Sermon each day and attend church services. Although I was reluctant to give up the drinking and excessive social activity, I agreed to do as he recommended.
