Now that the threatened danger [of a hurricane in 1959] is behind us it might seem easy to say, as I've heard main do— "We never thought it would strike us." Still, in contrast with the feverish and almost panic-stricken activity of many ... the perfect calm of some of the dwellers on the beach that stormy night must have seemed positively irritating to their neighbors....

Some of those who failed to take the radio and TV warnings seriously were not motivated in their apparent indifference by either laziness, lack of imagination, or lack of desire to cooperate fully. I know that in main cases it was simply their deep inner confidence that God would not let His children receive any real hurt.
