Membership Meetings Supporting and Helpful

The success of a Christian Science Reading Room depends in large measure upon the spiritual activity of its staff, the Reading Room committee, and church members. Occasional carefully planned membership meetings in the interest of Reading Room activities are most helpful and may well be encouraged. The following reports illustrate the substantial results which accrue from a united effort in this direction.

A librarian writes: "Our Reading Room seemed well located; in fact, it was next to the leading hotel, but on an upper floor. The members had realized for some time that its purpose would be much better fulfilled in a ground-floor location and had expressed themselves accordingly.

"With this in mind, the librarian obtained permission from the executive board to present, for the benefit of the church members, a symposium in the interest of the Reading Room. A well-rounded program set forth the rich store of spiritual treasures available in this room. Its able and inspiring presentation was enthusiastically received. After the meeting there was a noticeable increase in Reading Room activity.

"It was not long before the Reading Room committee found an acceptable ground-floor location. Within a month our new Reading Room was opened to the public. The good location, the beauty of the rooms, as well as the atmosphere of peace and quietude, evoked appreciative comments.

"In the three months of occupancy there has been a marked increase in sales as well as in the number of people using the room for study. The two display windows, facing on a busy shopping street, are attracting much attention. Many of those stopping at the windows sooner or later come inside to inquire about Christian Science. Cause for special gratitude has been the reawakened interest in Christian Science of some who had once accepted its teachings but had lost interest temporarily. The attendants have shown marked aptitude in receiving individuals who have come to the Reading Room seeking light.

"Possibly the greatest gain to date is the joyous spirit of unity among the members of the church, an aroused sense of dedication, and their eager acceptance of the challenge to meet, through the Reading Room, the indifference of the community to the healing and redeeming mission of Christian Science."

An executive board reports: "For several years, our members had been increasingly aware of the fact that if the Reading Room was to fulfill its mission, it would have to be located where the public could find it readily.

"Several membership meetings were held in behalf of this activity. It became evident that the members were of one mind in desiring to establish a Reading Room in the downtown section.

"Before taking any human footsteps, the members studied references in the Bible and 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' by Mary Baker Eddy. 'Preparing the room' was the theme chosen. Particularly helpful was a verse from Mark (14:15): 'And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.'

"Also helpful was a passage from 'Miscellaneous Writings' by our Leader (pp. 152, 153): 'Exercise more faith in God and His spiritual means and methods, than in man and his material ways and means, of establishing the Cause of Christian Science. If right yourself, God will confirm His inheritance. "Be not weary in well doing." Truth is restful, and Love is triumphant.' Each member made a list of the qualities which should be apparent in a Reading Room, some of which were love, joy, peace, tenderness, beauty, healing, charity, holiness, and harmony. Each step in connection with the remodeling and decorating unfolded harmoniously. Within a short time our prayers and efforts found manifestation in a beautiful ground-floor Reading Room which expressed all the desired qualities."

Another librarian writes: "Our large window has ample room for good displays, and many are seen looking at them and reading the books. One woman came in to inform us that she read the displayed citations from the Lesson-Sermon every morning on her way to work and expressed much gratitude for the inspiration gained.

"Since we have opened the Reading Room, sales have increased over 33⅓ per cent, and the number of visitors has doubled. Our joy and gratitude are unbounded that we are having a part in this missionary activity of our beloved Cause."
