Spirituality Is Essential
Many teachings stress humanitarianism, emphasize the importance of good human relationships. They urge brotherhood, benevolence, and peace among men and nations. These are indeed worthy objectives. But Christian Science affirms that it is not enough for men to be good human beings, to be good neighbors, to be generous and kind. It is essential to mankind's salvation that they recognize man as spiritual, not material.
Human goodness alone is not adequate to the demonstration of health and the destruction or prevention of disease. To gain true dominion over disease or any other discord, one must understand that God is infinite Spirit and that man is God's incorporeal image and likeness. The recognition that man is not physical but exists exclusively as immortal idea in Mind, God, is the only sure remedy for the ills of the flesh and for the demonstration of genuine harmony among men. A spiritual understanding of God, divine Truth, Life, and Love, alone heals the sick and restores harmony.
Human philosophy and psychology have never succeeded in preparing men to heal the sick as Christ Jesus did. A spiritual understanding of God and of His incorruptible creation is requisite in the Christian method of healing the sick. Nothing material, philosophical, or human can act as a substitute for spiritual understanding.
