"I will give you rest"
Spiritual ignorance imposes burdens that are as unnecessary as they are undesirable. These burdens can be lifted. Christ Jesus gave his followers the promise (Matt. 11:28), "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
Who is the "me" to whom we are to go and who is the "I" who will give us rest? The human Jesus was speaking, but as usual he was directing thought to the Christ, his divine nature. Throughout his entire ministry the unity of Jesus with Christ was unfolded in a way that makes the term "Christ Jesus" of ever-increasing importance.
The relationship of Jesus to Christ is illustrated in the terms "way" and "way-shower." The way leads from sin to holiness, from a material sense of existence to the spiritual. It is the way of the Christ, God's ideal, the way Jesus made clear to all men in demonstrating his superiority over the world, the flesh, and the devil, over whatever would obscure man's perfection and completeness as a son of God.
