"The Lord is our king"

The Psalmist declared (Ps. 10: 16). "The Lord is King for ever and ever." How, one might ask can we say that God is our King when, in fact, we are under the direction of an executive authority which, according to the customs and laws of the particular country, has certain powers that affect our lives?

While it is true that humanly we are under the government of a temporal authority and must obey it. Christian Science supports the Biblical truth that there is a supreme power which is infinitely good and which is greater than any human authority. Governments may come and go and temporal laws may change, but God, the supreme governing Principle, controlling His universal creation, continues forever.

In countries which enjoy the elective franchise in selecting the executive authority, the thought of the one selected is usually consistent with the composite thought of the majority of the electorate. If an individual voter declines to make a choice, he, in effect, appoints others to decide the outcome who may be inherently less spiritually or morally minded than he is. He, by reason of his apathy, may find an official elected whose thoughts are consistent with his own neglect of duty.
