For several months I was troubled...
For several months I was troubled with an abdominal ailment which was very alarming. I tried to do prayerful work about it myself in Christian Science, but there was much fear which had to be eliminated from my consciousness. While this fear was in my thought, the condition was aggravated.
I then asked a Christian Science practitioner to help me, and this help was willingly given. I was told to read this sentence by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, in Science and Health (p. 4): "What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds." This "growth in grace" I know to be the only real growth, and I derived much benefit from pondering Mrs. Eddy's statement.
The study of the first article in a pamphlet entitled "God's Law of Adjustment and Other Articles" helped me very much, particularly that part which reads: "God has no need of being adjusted. The only place where there is any demand for adjustment is in human consciousness." I knew that it was my human consciousness which had to be adjusted, and since God has no need of adjustment, my real self, His spiritual idea, had no need of any adjustment either.
