Since childhood I have had the...
Since childhood I have had the blessings of Christian Science, and I am most grateful for the healings and support I have received. While at college I had an eye condition which left me with impaired vision and which eventually led to the need of wearing glasses for reading. During the following years I had opportunity for growth in Christian Science through study and church work, but I seemed not to be able to free myself from dependence on glasses.
In 1940 I was required to take a series of physical tests, and I passed them all except the eye test. However, the medical examiner recommended that I discard the glasses for a few days, adding that in his opinion it might strengthen my eyes. This human remedial advice woke me up to the truth contained in Mrs. Eddy's definition of "eyes" on page 586 of Science and Health, which reads in part, "Spiritual discernment,—not material but mental."
