When I first heard of Christian Science...

When I first heard of Christian Science, I read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, but I was not spiritually ready for its message. However, some years later I became seriously ill mentally, living in constant fear day and night. Neither drugs nor the orthodox doctrines of the church of which I was an adherent could help me. Nothing and no one could allay my fears. Finally because of my unhappy condition, my mother, and then I, turned to Christian Science.

This time I began to study the textbook faithfully and humbly, and I gradually gained some understanding of what God, or Love, is. One passage proved particularly helpful. It reads (pp. 365,366), "The poor suffering heart needs its rightful nutriment, such as peace, patience in tribulation, and a priceless sense of the dear Father's loving-kindness." I read and reread this passage many times.

With the help of a practitioner, my health was at last restored, and I was able to return to work. Through this experience, I learned humility, for I now realized that mere intellectual achievement, which I had previously valued so highly, was not to be compared with the spiritual understanding of God which I had gained. The healing has been permanent; since that time Christian Science has been my only physician, and it has also been my guide.
