More than twelve years ago an alarming internal condition manifested itself, and although I had help from a Christian Science practitioner, I was fearful and confused. To satisfy myself, I went to a specialist, who, after examining me, told me I had a cancerous growth and advised a major operation almost immediately. I told him I would think it over, but I wanted to go for a holiday first.

I went back to the practitioner and told her the verdict. Just to hear her say, "There's no need to have that operation," was most comforting. She also said that all I needed was a change in my thinking and a deeper understanding of my true relationship to God as His image and likeness. When I decided to work the problem out entirely in Christian Science, loving work was taken up.

I began to learn that true growth is spiritual and that all I needed was growth in grace, in love, and in understanding. I realized that as a child of God I could only reflect true growth. There was also much in my thinking to be uncovered and destroyed, such as self-pity and self-condemnation.
