MIND, THE ONLY MEDICINE

Before our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, discovered Christian Science, she experimented with drugs to ascertain their healing effect on the sick. She once healed a patient by administering unmedicated pellets (see Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 156). The patient's faith in the belief that the pills contained a drug healed her. Mrs. Eddy demonstrated in other experiments that it was the patients' faith, a mental quality, and not the material medicine or a physician that healed them.

After her discovery of Christian Science, our Leader demonstrated that faith in God and an understanding of Him as omnipotent and omnipresent good constitute the effectual and permanent remedy for mankind. Through the clear understanding of God as Spirit and of man as perfect, spiritual, and eternal, all ills of mankind—mental, physical, moral—are healed.

Material medicine, drugs, hygiene, and other so-called remedies have no place in the healing practice of Christian Science. In a statement in Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 142):"God being All-in-all, He made medicine; but that medicine was Mind. It could not have been matter, which departs from the nature and character of Mind, God." And she continues: "Truth is God's remedy for error of every kind, and Truth destroys only what is untrue. Hence the fact that, to-day, as yesterday, Christ casts out evils and heals the sick."
