About twenty-seven years ago I...

About twenty-seven years ago I was left partially paralyzed by what the doctors said had been diphtheria. They told me that rest and quiet were the only things that would do any good and that if I had enough of those, after a few years I might be able to get around. At the time, I was not able to step over a doorsill by myself. I was confined to bed most of the time and was much depressed.

My wife took me and our two small children to the home of my parents in a neighboring state, where the climate was more agreeable. My brother, noting my physical condition and state of mind, explained that he was interested in Christian Science and asked if I would like to try this healing religion. Being very much distraught at the time, I said I would try anything if it did not necessitate my seeing or talking to anyone. He assured me this was not necessary, and a practitioner was called to take up prayerful work at once.

The next day, after a ride in the country, I lay on the davenport resting. My mother and my wife were upstairs, and suddenly I had a great desire to go up and talk to them. I arose and climbed the full flight of stairs by myself. At each step I took new courage, and a great feeling of elation came over me. The others were astonished to see me walking freely. This astonishment soon turned to joy over my new-found freedom.
