"ADVANCE AND BE RECOGNIZED"

A Sentry on military duty is required to challenge anyone who approaches out of the darkness with the words: "Halt! Who goes there?" After the person approaching has given his name, he is then ordered to "advance and be recognized." When he has been recognized by means of identification papers and tags, the sentry lets him pass.

As one emerges from the darkness of material thinking into the light of spiritual understanding through his study of Christian Science, it is well for him to keep constantly in mind the command, "Advance and be recognized." For it is only by his advancement in spiritual understanding that one can be recognized as a Christian Scientist.

This advancement, as well as the consequent recognition, is important not only for the individual student, but also for the growth of the Christian Science movement. On page 22 of "Pulpit and Press" our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes: "If the lives of Christian Scientists attest their fidelity to Truth, I predict that in the twentieth century every Christian church in our land, and a few in far-off lands, will approximate the understanding of Christian Science sufficiently to heal the sick in his name. Christ will give to Christianity his new name, and Christendom will be classified as Christian Scientists."
