CONSIDERATION AND DECISION

When Samuel was directed to anoint one of the sons of Jesse as a successor to Saul, God forbade him to select the towering and handsome Eliab. "The Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart" is the explanation given in I Samuel (16:7). When David was brought in from the fields where he had been tending his father's sheep, Samuel heard and obeyed God's direction (verse 12), "Arise, anoint him: for this is he."

When the members of a Church of Christ, Scientist, meet to elect officers or to pass judgment on church affairs, they too must shun outward appearances and look only on the heart, or in other words, look upon the spiritual reality. And not only should they exercise this spiritual vision, they should give earnest heed to the perfect, spiritual dictation which is perpetually given by divine Mind.

Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 82), "In a world of sin and sensuality hastening to a greater development of power, it is wise earnestly to consider whether it is the human mind or the divine Mind which is influencing one." As one comprehends God's interpretation of His own being and of His infinite creation, he is in communion with God and under the salutary influence of immortal Mind.
