I was raised in Christian Science,...

I was raised in Christian Science, and with the help of my mother and practitioners I had numerous healings. However, there came a time when I had to learn to do my own prayerful work.

I was struggling to heal a painful muscular stiffness in my neck and shoulders, but was using only the letter of Science, as I later realized. After several sleepless nights I called a practitioner whom I know to be a devoted worker. When she heard my tearful request for help she said, "We will have no sympathy with error." The pain stopped instantly. It was several days before the stiffness was completely corrected, but during that time I gained a greater desire to serve God through Christian Science. I was guided to a more consecrated daily study of the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly and to membership in The Mother Church and one of its branches.

Because of growth in spiritual understanding, which has come as a result of these steps, I have had healings of chronic colds, burns, eyestrain, and upset stomach through my own work. In addition, I have proved over and over again the protective power of Christian Science.

I am grateful for these proofs of progress and also for the overcoming of wrong mental attitudes, such as criticism, self-consciousness, pride of intellect, bad temper, distaste for housework, and dislike of children. I have often been comforted and healed by the impersonal love expressed through our church services, our lectures, and our periodicals. I am deeply grateful to our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for the peace and joy which have come into my life through participation in church work.— (Mrs.) Helen Black, Oakland, California.
