Christian Science became of vital...
Christian Science became of vital interest to me nearly forty years ago when a member of my family was healed of a tumor through realizing that "the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword,... and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Hebr. 4:12). Another member was healed of epilepsy of many years' standing when she was obedient to the demand (Josh. 24:15), "Choose you this day whom ye will serve." As a result of these healings seven members of our family became students of Christian Science. Catarrh, chronic indigestion, hemorrhoids, tonsillitis, migraine, eczema, and other physical discords have been healed through the faithful application of the rules laid down by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and her other writings.
When our son was about twelve, the back of one of his hands was almost covered with warts. I had done some prayerful work on the matter, but one morning I observed that he was troubled by a growing manifestation of the condition. It occurred to me that a wart is a material growth, an accretion, and this passage from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy came to me (p. 68): "Christian Science presents unfoldment, not accretion; it manifests no material growth from molecule to mind, but an impartation of the divine Mind to man and the universe." I saw that there could be no acquisitiveness to manifest itself in an abnormal growth. That was the end of the warts, for when next I thought of them they were not in evidence. Another outstanding healing was that of old and deep scars—one on my head and one under the chin.
While we were stationed in the tropics, where I was the only student of Christian Science in the vicinity, I applied myself diligently to the study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings. The growth in understanding that resulted enabled me to meet quickly most of the problems that presented themselves. But one alarming condition, a partial paralysis of one side of my face and neck, occasioned a call for help from my teacher.
