When I began the study of Christian Science...

When I began the study of Christian Science I did not have much confidence in it. A painful ingrowing toenail had developed, and I went to a doctor who lanced my toe. Proud flesh grew in the wound, and a running sore resulted. I went back for further treatment, but that did not help. After I had spent several months of misery, a member of my family suggested that I consult a Christian Science practitioner. As we lived many miles from a practitioner, I wrote to one. I did not think of my foot again for three days. When I did think about it, I found the proud flesh had vanished, and the sore was healed.

I was then going through a time of great physical and mental need. I had lost much weight and was very nervous. One of the several doctors I had gone to was a physician of high repute. He told me that I had symptoms of pernicious anemia and held out little hope for a cure. Another doctor said that I might have tuberculosis. My healing came through the understanding of Truth I found in Science.

I thought, however, that I could take what I wanted from Christian Science and leave the rest. I learned through bitter experience that, as Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 326), "If we wish to follow Christ, Truth, it must be in the way of God's appointing." I am thankful for the better concept of God that Christian Science is giving me. I was brought up to think of Him as a severe, critical judge who was ready to condemn me for the least infraction. However, I am now learning that God is Love, and His love is ever drawing me closer to Him. I have been sustained and healed in times of grief. Lost articles have been recovered by my realizing that nothing is lost in reality.
