THE POWER OF INTELLIGENCE

It is generally conceded that intelligence manifests power, because it gives one the ability to act wisely in meeting situations and in coping with complex circumstances. It is less widely acknowledged that intelligence gives one direct power over matter and its seeming laws. But this is the profound lesson which the Scriptures teach. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 23), "The prophets, Jesus, and the apostles, demonstrated a divine intelligence that subordinates so-called material laws; and disease, death, winds, and waves, obey this intelligence."

These men were not the savants of their times, but they introduced an intelligence which confounded the learned. The understanding they demonstrated did not then require technical knowledge of the material forces involved in the phenomena they dealt with; and Christian Science shows that the exercise of spiritual power does not require such technical knowledge today.

Christian Science reveals the fact that intelligence is the primal quality of God, divine Mind, and that man, God's spiritual image, manifests it. Divine intelligence includes the knowledge of all truth: the supremacy of Spirit; man's sonship with God; the presence of the one spiritual creation; the action of divine law; the perfection of real being. But divine intelligence is a quality which only humility and purity of heart can demonstrate.
