When Christian Science was...
When Christian Science was recommended to a member of my family as a method of healing, I went to a Reading Room and borrowed the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I found no difficulty at all in understanding its teachings, for many of them were what I had always believed.
At that time I had for some months been bothered by a throat irritation, which caused paroxysms of coughing, especially when I was in bed. Two doctors had given me throat paints and gargles, but none of them had helped me. My husband had bought me various bottles of cough mixtures, but these also had failed to bring healing. It was my custom to go to bed with at least six bottles and jars of medicine on my bedside table, and once the trouble started I would swallow one after another of these potions. When I started reading Science and Health, I scrapped the medicine and overcame my fear. The healing was not a quick one, but gradually the trouble became less until it ceased altogether. This happened about twelve years ago. The experience had so faded from my thought that it was not until some time later, when my husband told a friend about this healing, that I remembered it.
Another healing for which I am particularly grateful took place about the same time. I had gone to a farm for a holiday with our two small boys. Two days before we were to return, the younger boy, aged five, became ill with a high fever and could retain no food or water. The next day, when there still was no improvement, I realized that I would have to take a firm stand for Truth if I wished to leave the following day as arranged. I told the boy that I was going to help him and that he was to go to sleep. While he slept I spent two hours going over the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, trying to realize the truth of each statement I read. I had hardly finished when the boy woke up and asked to be dressed. I helped him, and we joined the family. He ate what he fancied and was quite well. I had expected a healing, but I could hardly believe my own eyes at the quickness of it.
