"GOD CREATED ... EVERY LIVING CREATURE"

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Have you ever been to a zoo? Then you can guess how excited Tommy was over his first trip to one. A friend was taking him and some other boys who went to the same Christian Science Sunday School to the zoo, and he could hardly wait for the day to come. There was only one thing that bothered Tommy. Sometimes he was afraid of animals. A big dog lived at the end of his street, and every time Tommy saw him his legs wanted to run away; at least, that is the way Tommy had explained it to his Sunday School teacher. Several other children in his Sunday School class had said they were afraid of dogs too.

Tommy thought about this on the way to the zoo, but after they had arrived there he forgot all about it. There were too many things to see. The monkeys were so much fun to watch. The friend pointed out that the mothers carried their little babies so tenderly and carefully that they could not be harmed. No matter how anxious they were to get the peanuts offered them, they always took care of the babies first. The mother lion, too, seemed much more interested in playing with her two little cubs than in looking terrifying.

When they came to the snakes, the keeper was cleaning out the glass cages. The children were very much interested in seeing how gently he handled the snakes when it was necessary. Tommy had never thought snakes could be pretty or lovable, but it was evident that the keeper really loved them. It was shown in the gentle way he handled them and talked to them.
