Charity is a bedrock virtue, not a thing of moods or gushes. The man who comes home after doing some good deed for a stranger might be grouchy with his wife, or lose his temper with the children. These lapses may not be too serious; but they suggest, at the very least, that he lacks the quality of soul which genuine charity involves.

Charity is not simply being generous or helpful toward others. Charity is also patience and forbearance. It is humility and understanding. It is love for God expressed in love of neighbor....
