For the countless ways in which...
For the countless ways in which Christian Science has blessed me during my entire life, I can never adequately express my gratitude. I am very grateful for the Christian Science Sunday School, which I attended for eighteen years, and for a wise mother, who early saw the importance of encouraging me to do my own metaphysical work.
When I was a small child playing in a vacant lot one Saturday, I stepped into a hole occupied by a nest of yellow jackets. The insects attacked me: there were hornets in my clothing and shoes. I was stung from head to toe, and my eyes were almost closed with the swelling. My mother, after talking to me of Love and instilling in me a feeling of love for all God's creatures, and explaining that I had unintentionally destroyed the home of the hornets, sent me to my room with my own copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I read familiar passages, and in a short time, although the evidence was not entirely gone, I went outside to play again with the other children. The next day I went to Sunday School, and there was no mark to show that I had gone through this experience.
When I was just out of high school I spent a year in a foreign country, living with relatives who were not Christian Scientists. This was my first experience far from home, with no parent to turn to in time of need. A fall from a bicycle caused an injury which presented a very unlovely picture of a badly swollen and discolored leg. The knee was also swollen, and I suffered extreme pain in walking. The only person who saw my injury urged me to see a doctor, but I said that I could take care of it; and this I did by turning wholeheartedly to God, without anyone else being aware of the condition. The next morning I was able to walk a long way to fulfill an obligation, and needless to say, I have never had any recurrence of the trouble.
