STUDY, PROGRESS, AND GOAL

To study and ponder the Word of God awakens thought to comprehend reality. It unfolds Truth in human consciousness and dispels the mist of mortal thought. The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy (II Tim. 2:15), "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

Christian Scientists are seeking through study and contemplation of the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy to measure up to this standard set by Paul. Mrs. Eddy established the Christian Science periodicals and the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly to aid them in the systematic study of Christian Science. That she herself faithfully studied the Lesson is averred by Dr. Lyman P. Powell in his biography entitled "Mary Baker Eddy: A Life Size Portrait." He writes (p. 239), "Never was any Christian Scientist more assiduous in the daily study of the Bible Lessons than was the founder of the faith." We cannot be too faithful in our study, which enables us to hold to the truth of being. The use of the Concordances to Mrs. Eddy's writings and the concordance to the Bible is also an invaluable help. Their use is not only a convenience but a necessity. Those who study with the help of the Concordances gain the bread and not merely the crumbs of understanding.

One of the most common arguments that would hinder our studying is the belief of lack of time. Here is the true story of one student who proved in her own experience that it is not more time, but better use of time, that is often needed. A young mother of three small children had a great desire to study and progress in her understanding of Christian Science. She knew beyond any shadow of doubt that it held the remedy for all the problems connected with a home and the rearing of children, and above all she had a great yearning to know more of God. But she seemed to have little time for study.
