Signs of the Times

Dean Chandler in The Auckland Star Auckland, New Zealand

The words health, whole, and holy are closely related to each other. In the Greek New Testament the words whole and save are largely interchangeable. "Thy faith hath saved thee." "Thy faith hath made thee whole." In both of these positive statements of Jesus, taken from Luke 7:50 and from Matthew 9:22, respectively, the same Greek word is used (sesoke).

If we turn to Acts 16 we shall find the account of the imprisonment of Paul and Silas at Philippi, and in the thirtieth verse we read about the gaoler asking Paul how he might be saved. In the next verse occur the famous words that are on the lips of all evangelists, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved." In all these instances the same word is used in the Greek.
