Signs of the Times

Rev. Marshall Ketchum in a sermon in The Fallbrook Enterprise Fallbrook, California

Every now and then we hear someone say that Christianity is too idealistic for this modern, practical world. The Sermon on the Mount is sometimes thought of as a perfectionist ideal which is beautiful, but not very useful.

When Jesus concluded the Sermon on the Mount, he said that "whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man," and "every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man." Christianity is not just the right way, or the moral way, or the good way— it is actually the sensible way. And to hear about the Christian way and not follow it is not only wrong, sinful, and immoral—it is actually a stupid way to act. That is the claim that Jesus makes.
