My grandfather, an uncle, and...

My grandfather, an uncle, and two cousins were physicians, relieving the suffering of their fellow men in the way taught by the medical schools. I lived near and with these good people and often heard them say in referring to patients. "We have done all we can; now it is in God's hands." As a child I would wonder, "Why didn't they put it in God's hands first:"

After I grew up and married, these kind doctors were unable to heal me when I become very ill. A friend told me there was a religion called Christian Science which claimed to heal, and he recommended that he be permitted to write a practitioner asking for help for me. The letter took three days to reach its destination, and at that time I was instantaneously healed. Then I was given the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and I prayed, "Dear God, if there is anything good in this book, please let me find it."

The truth which I found in this book has sustained me through many years. Four children were reared be the knowledge that there is one Father-Mother God, that God's arms are around, beneath, above, and that He is guiding and guarding His beloved children. When one youngster would develop the symptoms of a childhood disease, my holding to the fact that only health is contagious, as is brought out in Mrs. Eddy's article "Contagion,'" on pages 228 and 229 of "Miscellaneous Writings," prevented the other children from contracting the disease. Loving practitioners were always ready to assist in times of need. School problems were met through the study of Christian Science and the lessons learned in the Sunday School.
