Over twelve years ago I returned to the United States, after an absence of several years, a disheartened, disillusioned, and unhappy man. In this state of mind I drifted for a year and a half. One day a dear friend expressed to me her fear and anguish because of an illness of her little son. Although I possessed the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and for years had occasionally attended Christian Science Sunday services, I had not been able to understand the simple truth as it is given in this book.

My compassion for this friend, my love for children, and my desire to learn how one can be healed caused me to begin regularly to read the textbook. After several weeks I discovered to my surprise and joy that I was healed of a chronic stomach ailment which I had had for fifteen years. This proved to me that thoughtful and unprejudiced reading of Science and Health brings healing.

Grateful for and encouraged by this healing, I attended the Sunday services of a Christian Science church in my neighborhood for the first time since returning to the United States. I could understand very little of what was read from the desk, but the peaceful environment, the love and sincerity expressed by the Readers and the soloist, led me to attend regularly the Sunday services and the Wednesday evening testimony meetings. Daily study of the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly was earnestly taken up.
