Stomach ailment healed by action of divine Truth

The way which led me to Christian Science is described in the Bible passage (Jer. 29:13, 14): "And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. And I will be found of you, saith the Lord." Before I learned of Christian Science I had made a considerable study of the religio-philosophical lore of great thinkers and poets in all periods and was often much edified. My professional studies had just been completed, and shortly before my departure I heard about Christian Science for the first time through a woman whose fund of knowledge I much admired.

I borrowed the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and took it with me to my new residence. There I read it through with interest, but just as I would any other book. It did not strike me at the time that the truth revealed in it not only solves mental and moral conflicts, but also has a healing influence on the body. I accepted in my usual way only the philosophic value and contents of the book. Beautiful, liberating hours it gave me, but after I had read it, I felt I had done it justice and sent it back. Then I heard nothing more about Christian Science for a long time. But a seed must have found good soil, for whenever I thought of the book, I had the same happy feeling that had touched me deeply the first time I read it. The wish grew in me to possess the book. I asked in bookstores for it. I wrote to a publishing house in Berlin and also to London, but in vain.

One day in 1928 I met a woman whom I had known slightly. In our conversation she mentioned Christian Science. I gladly accepted the message, and then I learned that church services were held in the city. From that time on I attended the services regularly, bought the textbook, and began to study the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly.
