In one of your recent issues I note an editorial headed "Edited As Christ Would Have," in which reference is made to a newspaper published in Topeka, Kansas, and edited by a clergyman. Also, the editorial indicates that The Christian Science Monitor resulted from this clergyman's efforts to run that paper as he thought Christ [Jesus] would edit it.

While I am sure everyone interested in clean journalism appreciates the effort that this clergyman made, the inference that he was influential in any way in establishing the Monitor is not correct. The Monitor was the result of the work of the Discoverer and founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, and was a natural outcome of it. In 1883 Mrs. Eddy stated (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 4), "At this date, 1883, a newspaper edited and published by the Christian Scientists has become a necessity." And she continues (ibid., p. 7):
